Sealants can be a super beneficial tool, especially in pediatric dentistry. A sealant is a protective coating that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (premolars and molars.) These surfaces account for four out of five cavities in children. Sealant acts as a barrier to food, plaque and acid, protecting these vulnerable, decay-prone areas of the teeth.
The main reason we recommend sealants for children is because molars can be very hard to reach and properly clean, increasing the risk of tooth decay on certain parts of the molar. Sealants can actually help prevent a cavity from forming by acting as a protective barrier for the tooth.
